This is the fourth time a ‘Roy of the Rovers’ issue has been featured in the series. Mark Dickinson of Accrington won £2 for successfully requesting a picture of Leighton James scoring the first goal in a 2-0 win over Liverpool. ‘Leighton Lashes Home the First Against Liverpool’ ! The caption reads: ‘Leighton James won’t forget this moment. He’s recently joined QPR and was seeking his first goal for the club. This is it ! And Champions Liverpool are the … Continue reading

The Ripley Bros. QPR Card

Posted on by Saycey

When Ray’s Jazz Shop was located in Shaftesbury Avenue, there used to be a box of records described as “rare as hen’s teeth” by the counter. This particular card is probably in that category. It is not known exactly how many cards in the Ripley Bros club colours set there are or when they were issued ? The Football Cartophilic Info Exchange website doesn’t know either, but they do list over 50 other known cards which includes a number of … Continue reading

From 1950: Queen’s Park Rangers on Parade – Sports Reporter Magazine

Posted on by Saycey

The Soccerbilia website states that ‘Sports Reporter’ started life as a small format magazine. It first appeared on 21st August 1948 and continued up until at least 15th February 1950. However this particular edition is slightly later than that, dated 18th March 1950. The illustrated weekly was available every Saturday and by now had gone up from 4d to 6d. Interestingly, it describes itself as ‘the paper that supports the Man who supports football.’ That leads me into the letters … Continue reading

When Phil Parkes was Tempted by the Reigning Miss BBC Golden Girl !

Posted on by Saycey

It was Pancake Day of course last week and it reminded me that somewhere in my collection was a Press photo of Phil Parkes being tempted with a pancake by the reigning BBC Golden Girl. It’s dated 24th February 1974 and under the title of ‘Tempting Dish’ it reads: ‘Pat Keeling, the reigning Miss BBC Golden Girl, tempts Queen’s Park Rangers goalkeeper Phil Parkes with a pancake at Lincoln’s Inn Fields in London today. Phil had just put Pat, winner … Continue reading

The Comic Connection – No.8 – Tiger and Jag – 2nd May 1970

Posted on by Saycey

This is the second time I’ve featured ‘Tiger and Jag’ in the series and this one is an earlier edition from 1970. ‘Skid Solo’ adorns the cover and then continues inside for a further two pages. Readers were then invited to: ‘Take your seats for the wrestling contest of the year !‘ – It looked like being the fight of the year…Mick McManus versus Johnny Cougar !’ – In the early rounds of the fight there had been non-stop action…then … Continue reading

From the 1966/1967 Season: ‘Why I Support the Top Team – QPR – The Go-Go Goal Getters’

Posted on by Saycey

As far as I can remember, this leaflet was handed out to fans as they entered the ground, probably before the Bristol Rovers home game on 3rd December 1966 (Rangers scored three more that day): ‘As a good friend and loyal supporter of Q.P.R. please help us to win more friends and more loyal supporters by passing this message to a friend of yours’ – I kept mine of course, besides, Rangers had a big following at Selborne School in … Continue reading

The 1980’s Hoover Advert Featuring Alan McDonald

Posted on by Saycey

Following on from the Gola and Cossack Hairspray articles that went up last year, QPR related adverts seem to have turned into a mini-series ! This latest one features Alan McDonald and appeared in the Official Club Newspaper, ‘Bush Ranger’ in the late 80’s. We lived next to the Hoover factory in Bideford Avenue for a while after the family had moved up the Western Avenue from the Bush. Although Hoover’s became well known for making vacuum cleaners these iconic … Continue reading

The Comic Connection – No.7 – Roy of the Rovers – 29th January 1983

Posted on by Finney

‘Roy of the Rovers’ has been featured twice before in this series and this particular edition is dated 29th January 1983. Graham Beach of Worcester Park, Surrey won £3.00 for successfully requesting Mike Flanagan’s ‘goal’ in the 4-0 defeat of Shrewsbury Town earlier in the season. Elsewhere, the first character to be featured is ‘Mighty Mouse’ – Kevin Mouse, known on the football field as ‘Mighty Mouse’, was a medical student at St. Victor’s Hospital and a part-time player for … Continue reading

The 1907/08 Cohen Weenen Cigarette Card Featuring QPR Captain William Yenson

Posted on by Finney

The tobacco company Cohen Weenen & Co. issued a series of cards for the 1907/08 season which depicted football club captains. This set of 60 included captains in Division 1, Division 2 and also from the Southern League. This particular card features William Yenson and is from series No.5. I don’t know what the current valuation is, but the book price for these cards was stated at around £13.00 each. These sets were re-printed in 1998 by Card Promotions. The … Continue reading

The Second John Baines QPR Football Card

Posted on by Finney

Martin Botwright suggested to me that a second John Baines QPR football card was known to exist. Then a few months ago Moreno came across it within a collection of cards that were coming up for auction and kindly forwarded me an image of the card which is shown below. The Lot was estimated at between £250 and £350 and included six other Baines cards. The first card was difficult to date, but this one is even more difficult despite … Continue reading
