On a very overcast morning at the TSG Training Centre, it was the Addicks who provided the first attempt of the game when their No.11 forced a superb save from Kasey Taylor.
As the visitors were about to take a corner, play was temporarily held up, in order for Charlie Street to receive some attention.
When it was eventually taken, the R’s keeper went on to make another excellent save, and as for Charlie Street, he went off to change his shirt to a number 17.
The hosts first shot on target came from Kalen Brunson after the R’s winger had been set-up by Ashley Trujillo.
Around the half-hour mark, and following Rico Kennedy’s cross, Josh Wright’s header at the far post, gave Rangers the lead.
The same two players were soon involved again, but on that occasion the ball ended up going behind for a corner.
Then, Kalen Brunson’s strike hit the side-netting after he had got to the bye-line from the left-wing.
And straight after that, Logan Williams grabbed the ball before Tom Wiles could attempt a shot.
Nothing was given after Rico Kennedy had been clearly pushed over!
The R’s No.7 was left dazed and grounded after he, and the Charlton No.3, had both gone up to compete for the ball.
Eventually, he took a slow walk back to the dugout and James McAvoy replaced him.
The visitors drew level four minutes into added time courtesy of Kayode Peterkin.
And four minutes after that, Tom Wiles forced the keeper down to smother the ball.
Then, a couple of minutes later, the Addicks were awarded a penalty. Kasey Taylor diving to his right kept it out, and Mr Burton immediately blew the half-time whistle.
Into the second-half and after James McAvoy had tapped the ball to Ashley Trujillo, the Rangers No.10 couldn’t quite get enough on his attempt to trouble the keeper.
On 62 minutes, Charlie Street made way for Nkhai Majesty.
A long ball found Kyreece Moore out on the left-flank. The R’s captain then knocked it to Kalen Brunson, who cut in, pulled the trigger, and forced a flying save from Logan Williams.
James McAvoy’s cross found Kalen Brunson at the far post, but the R’s winger was wrong-footed and couldn’t put it away.
Then, Kalen Brunson was blatantly clipped by Zaion Christian after going on a run through the middle. Clearly a booking, but the referee just decided that a word would suffice!
Kasey Taylor, diving to his left, made a very good save to deny the visitors, and after that, the R’s keeper bravely smothered the ball at the feet of an opponent.
Harvey Boddy and Kemuel Edouard-Marisson were introduced at the expense of Jerrell Tang and Kalen Brunson respectively.
Against the run of play, and with just a few minutes remaining, Charlton scored a dramatic winner, when Raynon Richman smashed the ball into the bottom corner.
The culprit somehow got away with a heavy challenge on Kyreece Moore. In fact, there were no yellow cards issued throughout the game!
A disappointing result, but on the positive side, there were a number of impressive performances.
