The Fifth Taddy & Co. QPR Cigarette Card – Jabez (John) White

Taddy & Co. produced three sets of cards in their Prominent Footballer series. This is the fifth QPR card that I have featured from the first series in 1907.

On the reverse side of the card it reads: ‘A delightfully cool pipe tobacco, combining the sweetness and fragrance of the better class Virginia Tobaccos with the rich flavour of Latakia. Rather a fully-flavoured, but an eminently pleasant mixture.’

Jabez White was born in Droylesdon in 1879. Although he was christened ‘Jabez’ he always preferred to use the name ‘John’ apparently. His first club was Ollenshaw United and Rangers signed him from Grays United in 1901. He made his debut later that year on 28th September against Portsmouth. White scored his one and only 1st team goal at Brighton on 12th October 1907. He made a total of 140 appearances before being transferred to Leeds City in 1908.
