FAO Steve Russell - March of The Gladiators

Post by Bill Elkins »

Hi Steve.

Many thanks for your text with regard to the above subject.

I would also like to apologise for my exteremely brief reply (Dont know !) as I hate texting
eg dont know how to :(

More to point of your question, I do not ever recall QPR running out to
'The March of The Gladiators' perhaps because I have no idea of the tune !

What I do recall from attending Loftus Road in the 1960's with my Dad is the team running out to
a tune called 'Blaze Away'.

I think that Blaze Away had some sort of military connection (the Collins English Dictionary describes
Blaze as strong fire or flame, also an out burst of passion).

At least supporters in those day's could hear what was coming out of those large cylindrical speakers
mounted on the old Ellerslie Road stand, unlike in this modern era, announcing records were supplied by
WG Stores, Shepherds Bush Market. Happy Days ! .

Hello Bill,
i remember military bands playing that but I don't recall the
team running out to it in the 60's mate :?:

'As Bernard reminded me 'March of the Gladiators' was regularly used
at the Circus..

Bill I first started going in 1957 and the March of Gladiators tune was always played when the Rangers
team came out on to the pitch.

I understand it was played throughout most of the 1950s. By 1963/4 (Possibly before) I am sure it had been
discontinued by the club.
