Southampton Game

Post by Conor Campbell »

Looks like we may have to get 2 or more goals to get anything out of this game. Southampton have scored 8 in 3 games.
Hopefully, we will play with energy and creativity to give ourselves every chance.

Entertaining first half with plenty to like. Sinclair’s power obvious and unlucky to have decisions gone against him.
Smyth’s trickiness and pace causing problems. Chair and Kakay in attacking form. Edozie always looking like he has a goal
in him opened the scoring with a composed finish. Former R Manning committed a tasteless foul to stop Smyth racing past him.

Minutes later Colback controlled the ball with one touch and pings the ball into the bottom right corner from 25 yards to equalise.
Armstrong then puts the ball into the net from an offside position following a creative burst from Chair.
QPR finished the half with pressure on the Southampton goalmouth. 6 added minutes saw an important block of a through ball
by Kakay that surely prevented a second Saints goal. Begovic gathered in a corner well in a packed goalmouth.

3000 R/s fans in good voice.

You have to think that a Sinclair goal is coming in the second half.

QPR busy early second half with Smyth grazing the crossbar and Chair shooting but straight at keeper.
Southampton cross twice across the box but with nobody on the end of it each time.

The repeat fouling on Sinclair is beyond acceptable and the referee fails to punish Saints.

QPR keep at the task and with the Rs having the better play, Southampton shoot home through Armstrong on
the hour to take the lead. Rs battle well looking for the equaliser.

Colback and Smyth off for Duke McK and Albert on 70. The ref continues to frustrate.

Dozzell off on 80 for Colli as QPR push to get something out of the game.

Saints take free kick, get advantage, Begovic saves —- ref brings back for free for Saints. ?????

Then ref gives free when Saints stumble with no CO tact made. ????

Final Result Saints and Ref 2 - QPR 1

Just back......thought there were some similarities as in the previous game.

Down the other end, but Begovic at fault for the 1st goal.

Sinclair constantly fouled, gave everything but again he's left isolated much of
the time,

Paul Smyth not given the ball enough.

With more experience Rayan Kolli may have buried that chance in added time.

Great support from the travelling faithful...

The steward said you can't bring that into the ground. Err... its an orange!
No, you're not allowed

An expected defeat but at least we made a game of it I suppose.

Southampton had key players missing which helped us a bit. Only 23% possession for the R's
means you are not dominating play.

Looks like the strategy this season judging by all previous games is containment then try and score on the break.
That's all very well but you must take the few chances when they happen to arise.

Also a solitary striker up front with little support is not likely to create many goal scoring opportunities.

On a positive note the defensive set up seems reasonably well organised.
