U23's Lost at Charlton Today...

Post by Steve Russell »

Report from the Club website...

Ody Alfa’s late first half effort wasn’t enough for the R’s, with Shiloh Remy’s own goal, Daniel Kanu and Johl Powell wrapping up the victory for the Addicks.

The fixture, which was contested at Sparrows Lane started in a positive fashion for the visitors, with Arkell Jude-Boyd and Faysal Bettache threating for the R’s.

Despite the Addicks early dominance Paul Furlong’s side had their chances to take the lead, with Niko Hamalainen and Joseph Ajose both firing wide, but in the 21st minute the hosts were to make the breakthrough.

Kanu’s cross eventually being turned into his own net by Remy.

After going behind Rangers looked for an instant response, with Hamzad Kargbo and Ajose both seeing their shots blocked by the tireless Lucas Ness.

However, Charlton continued to threaten to double their lead, with Mahoney having to be on hand to keep the score at 1-0.

But, on the half an hour mark the Addicks did make it two courtesy of the troublesome Kanu who was fortuitously picked out by Euan Williams and then calmly tapped home.

Rangers eventually pulled a goal back in the 41st minute, with Alfa eventually able to bundle the ball home from Ajose’s corner kick.

But at the break Furlong’s side trailed.

Throughout the early exchanges of the second period, the R’s pushed for an equaliser with Joe Gubbins seeing his header cleared off the line, before substitute Alfie Llyod fired wide.

The introduction of Isaac Pitblado and Llyod certainly injected some energy into the Super Hoops, but moments later we saw a lengthy pause in the game with Llyod and Charlton’s Charlie Barker both receiving treatment following a clash of heads.

Following the unexpected pause the R’s continued to knock on the Charlton door, with Ajose continually troubling down the right-hand side.

Returning Dutch defender Jordy De Wijs saw his speculative free-kick whistle over with 15 minutes left on the clock.

Before Llyod had a chance from the edge of the box which fortuitously fell into the path of Kargbo but the Rangers striker was unable to divert it home.

With the clock ticking down Kanu had the ball in the back of the Rangers net, but the referee was quick to blow his whistle chalking off a strike which would’ve wrapped up the victory.

And in the 86th minute, the R’s thought they had snatched a point, with Llyod unlucky not to draw Rangers level with his edge of the box strike which cannoned back off of the base of post and out to safety.

Substitute Pitblado had do fantastically well to deny Williams late on, but Powell’s effort moments later bounced over Mahoney and into the net sealing the victory for the Addicks.

QPR U23s are next in action on the 8th February when they travel to south Wales to face Cardiff City at the Leckwith Stadium.

QPR XI: Mahoney, Jude-Boyd, De Wijs (Carlyle 84’), Gubbins, (Pitblado 58’) Hamalainen, Bettache, Ajose, Remy, Aveiro, Alfa (Llyod 58’), Kargbo

Subs not used: Halwax

Chris's report from our Facebook group....

Jordy De Wijs played 80 minutes and Conor Masterson, who was in the original squad, wasn’t even on the teamsheet.

I was informed at half time he has signed on loan for Gillingham and teams up with Charlie Kelman.

Sub Alfie Lloyd came on as sub on 60 and within a minute was involved in a clash of heads which saw both players receive lengthy treatment and had their heads bandaged up.

We conceded an own goal which was unfortunate but the second goal was poor defending. Ody Alfa reduced the arrears just before half time.

Second half was much improved and we had a few chances to equalise when Joe Gubbins had a far post header cleared off the line with the goalkeeper well beaten.

Then about ten minutes to go Alfie Lloyd had a 20 yard shot hit the base of the post and roll along the goal line and go past the other post. Their keeper made about 3 decent saves second half but we were dealt a sucker punch when Charlton got a third four minutes from the end.
