Having watched the U23’s at Colchester on Monday evening it got me thinking what do the bench warmers do all week to get match fit as there is a big difference between practice matches and full blown league games. For those in the know do we play behind doors matches against strong league teams?

There were no overage players on Monday night and although it would have deprived a couple of young players of competitive game time surely we should be playing some of the the expected bench warmers to prepare for the next first team fixture.

So what do the likes of Scowen and Cousins do for their salaries if not playing more than the odd few minutes (when we have a full squad to chose from) and it is no wonder our subs do not look as though they are playing for a first team place most of the time.

Bring back the proper men’s league the Football Combination as Monday’s game was populated with very young players and that is no preparation for the first team. We wouldn’t need to send players out on loan if we had such a league and they can be groomed to seamlessly slot in to the first team.
