At long last after two previous attempts Steve and I attended the match in Colchester's Jobserve Stadium which is a far cry from the old Layer Road stadium!
Nice modern stadium with an excellent playing surface and looking much bigger than its just over 10000 capacity. And.. you did not get bruised knees!

My first 'live' look at the U23's and with no over age players half the team looked too young to be out that late at night!

We had a good start with nice flowing attacking football against a Colchester side that was bottom of the table but had won their last game. Shodipo started but was later substituted,

We reached halftime at 1-0 with a goal from Amrit Bansal-McNulty and you thought given our own high league position things would get even better in the second half. It wasn't to be and as the freezing conditions set in our play seemed to drift into quiet spells, as in the first half, and midway through the second half Colchester scored from a somewhat dubious penalty when the Colchester forward seemed to decide to fall over when weaving across the penalty area. It was easily put away.

We then had chances of our own but finally succumbed to an 86 min winning goal for Colchester, their play boosted by the earlier penalty. The players looked glad to get off the field and their feelings were shared by the sparse crowd who were left to collect the bits of their anatomy that had succumbed to the 30 F temperature!

When you are born in Hammersmith Hospital and within the sound of Loftus Road, there isn't a choice!
