News from the Brent & Kilburn Times...

Winger David Wheeler is looking forward to the prospect of being coached by new Queen's Park Rangers manager Steve McClaren next season.

Former England boss McClaren took over at Loftus Road last month, signing a two-year deal following the departure of Ian Holloway.

As well as his spell in charge of the national team, the 57-year-old has previously managed in the Premier League with both Middlesbrough and Newcastle United; won the Eredivisie title with FC Twente in 2009-10; took charge of VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga; and was also assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

McClaren’s coaching CV is certainly an impressive one, and that is something which excites Wheeler.

“It is a rare opportunity to work with someone who has so much experience and has coached players at the very top level,” he told the club website.

Wheeler will hope for more luck with injuries under McClaren after enduring a frustrating first season with QPR last term.

After arriving from Exeter City last summer, the 27-year-old made just nine appearances in an injury-hit campaign.

Wheeler’s season was brought to a premature end in January after suffering an ankle injury that needed an operation.

Ahead of returning for pre-season, Wheeler has been a regular at the club’s training ground to ensure he is in the best possible shape when his colleagues do come back.

And the former Grecians wide man hopes that helps him avoid similar struggles with injuries next term.

“I was pretty-much fit for the last few games of last season but it wasn’t necessary to risk anything, it was more about making sure I was ready for this season,” he added.

“Theoretically I am fully fit, I just have to make sure I am sensible with my training.

“Like most sportspeople I just want to keep going, keep working, kicking more balls and running more yards.

“I just need to be sensible and make sure my training is efficient and effective.”

From a year ago, wonder what lies in store for David Wheeler?
